Tax payments

In 2009, AEGON received a net total of EUR 345.1 million in tax benefits. This amount includes tax paid by the company on behalf of its policyholders. In the United States, AEGON received USD 590 million in tax benefits related to cross-border intercompany reinsurance treaties. This was a reversal of tax losses incurred the previous year. In 2008, AEGON paid tax totaling EUR 437 million.

It should be noted that there is often no direct correlation between earnings for any given year and the amount of tax paid or received.
